Statue of Admiral Miaoulis

Statue of Admiral Miaoulis

At the entrance of Hydra's harbour, gazing out to the sea he ruled, stands the bronze statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis (1769–1835). A Hydriot ship-owner turned naval commander, Miaoulis led the Greek fleet through the War of Independence, his fire-ships scattering the far larger Ottoman navy and helping win Greece its freedom.

The statue is one of the first things you see as your boat comes in — and the heart of the island's great Miaoulia festival each June, when a replica flagship is burned at the harbour mouth in his honour.
