Melina Mercouri Hall

The Melina Mercouri Art and Concert Hall stands on the harbour front, a few steps from the statue of Andreas Miaoulis and below the Kanonia bastions. It is named after the actress and Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri.

The building has a longer memory than its name suggests: in the eighteenth century the site held one of Hydra’s two lazarettos, the quarantine stations where arrivals to the island were held before they were let in. The other stood on the islet off Vlychos.

The hall is run by the Municipality of Hydra. Through the summer it carries a changing programme of art exhibitions, concerts and talks; in winter it turns to community use.

Exhibitions are usually free to enter, and the hours change with each show — they are posted at the door and listed with the event.
