Mount Athos: A Place of Silence — Giorgos Taxidis

The Historical Archive–Museum of Hydra presents «Mount Athos. A Place of Silence», a painting exhibition by Giorgos Taxidis, held as part of the Theomitorika 2026 celebrations — co-organised with the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin on Hydra and the Mount Athos Centre (Agioritiki Estia) of Thessaloniki, curated by Anastasios Douros.

Between 2020 and 2025 the artist made more than fifteen journeys to Mount Athos, visited all twenty monasteries, followed the monks’ daily rhythm and shared in their worship. From that lived experience came 115 works — in pencil, charcoal, oil and watercolour, alongside sculpture and engraving. The exhibition has already travelled from Thessaloniki to Drama and to Constantinople before arriving on Hydra.

Opening night — Saturday 1 August, 20:30: a documentary by director Nikos Anagnostopoulos, filmed alongside the artist on Athos, screens in the museum’s atrium, followed by a discussion with Taxidis, the director and the curator. A catalogue accompanies the show, with texts by art historian Yannis Bolis and David Ebony (former managing editor of Art in America).
