Cine Gardenia — Open-Air Cinema

On summer nights, a few steps up from the harbour, Hydra goes to the movies the way it has since 1953: under the stars, at the open-air Cine Gardenia. For more than four decades the cinema has been kept alive by the volunteers of the Hydra Cinema Club — a labour of love that has made the Gardenia one of the island's most treasured institutions.

Evenings often begin with a children's programme before the main feature, and the mix runs from new releases to classics. The place has admirers far beyond the island: documentary maker Nick Broomfield celebrated the Gardenia as his favourite open-air cinema in the world in the BFI's Sight and Sound.
