Κανόνια — Τα Οχυρά του Λιμανιού
The stone bastions flanking the entrance of Hydra's harbour still carry the cannons that defended the island's merchant fleet in the years around the Greek War of Independence — the reason the western point is simply called Kanonia, "the cannons".
It is a five-minute walk from the port along the western waterfront, past the mansions of the great sea captains. Come at dusk: the cannons in silhouette against the sunset over the water make one of the island's signature images.
